On August 23rd, The Gaslight Anthem’s History Books tour electrified The Fillmore Philadelphia, with Joyce Manor and Pinkshift setting the stage for an unforgettable night. Having seen The Gaslight Anthem multiple times over the years, I can confidently say this was their best performance yet.
The evening kicked off with Pinkshift from Baltimore, who ignited the crowd with a high-energy 30-minute set. Their dynamic presence had the audience buzzing, and they teased the release of a new album next year—definitely something to look forward to.
Joyce Manor followed, turning up the intensity and instantly getting the crowd moving. Their fast-paced 20-song set, packed into just 45 minutes, had several mosh pits erupting across the floor. It was my first time seeing Joyce Manor live, and their raw energy left me eager for more.
Finally, The Gaslight Anthem took the stage, opening with the iconic “American Slang” and seamlessly blending classic hits like “45,” “Old Haunts,” and “The ‘59 Sound” with fresh tracks from their History Books album, including “Positive Charge” and “Michigan, 1975.” The crowd sang along to every word, growing more enthusiastic with each new song. For the grand finale, Pinkshift joined The Gaslight Anthem on stage for a powerful rendition of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” bringing the night to an exhilarating close.
The History Books Tour continues for another week, wrapping up in Detroit, MI, on September 1st. Fans in the area can catch The Gaslight Anthem again at the Sea Hear Now Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on Sunday, September 15th.
