On August 16th, 2024, Fred Mascherino of The Color Fred brought his much-anticipated Emo Night to the Anchor Rock Club in Atlantic City. Having seen last year’s performance at The Kill Shed, I was disappointed to miss this year’s show there. So, attending this event felt like making up for lost time, and it did not disappoint. Fred's Emo Night is more than just a tour with Sleep Cycles—it's a celebration of local talent, with each stop pulling in bands from the area. David Earl of Stid Productions curated a stellar lineup featuring Jon Puleio, Tug of War Machine, and Wave Break, while also doubling as DJ David Earl to keep the energy high throughout the night. Also in Attendance was The Escape Plans with their brand of Handprinted Clothing.
The evening opened with Jon Puleio of Familiar Things, delivering an intimate set of solo originals and well-chosen covers. The audience was immediately captivated by his heartfelt performance, setting a warm, welcoming tone for the night.
Next up was Tug of War Machine, a band known for their full-band performances. However, tonight they surprised the crowd with an acoustic duo setup. Despite the stripped-down format, they powered through at least ten tracks, including fresh material from their latest EP, IOUtopia. The acoustic arrangements brought a new depth to their music, proving that their songs resonate just as strongly in this format. If you get the chance, be sure to catch Tug of War Machine this fall.
Wave Break took the stage next, and having seen them three times since January, I knew I was in for a treat. Every performance seems to top the last, and this night was no exception. They played several tracks from their upcoming EP, Ignite//Decay, including "Call Me," "Cynical," "Embers," and "Wither Away." The anticipation for their August 30th release is palpable, and their upcoming Northeast tour is sure to be a hit, starting in New York on the same day.
Sleep Cycles followed, and I had been eagerly awaiting their return since I last saw them in November. Their set included the powerful "The Bridge Beneath," which had hooked me before, but this time, it was their newest track, "The Revelry," that left a lasting impression. Their sound continues to evolve in exciting ways.
Closing out Fred’s Emo Night was the man himself, Fred Mascherino. He delivered a nostalgic set that spanned his impressive career, playing hits from all the bands he’s been a part of, including fan favorites from Terrible Things and Breaking Pangaea. Speaking of Breaking Pangaea, they’re set to play a couple of shows starting this weekend, so fans have even more to look forward to.
As Fred wrapped up his sing-along set, DJ David Earl kept the party going, while Fred took the time to chat with fans, making the night even more special. If Fred is coming to your town—whether he's performing solo or with one of his many bands—do yourself a favor and go. It’s a night you won’t forget.
